Freshman Tory Martin scored a game-high 11 points in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 50-42 win over Salisbury University on Tuesday night at Ron Rosner Arena in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles, 14-12 on the season, will visit top-seeded Marymount University in the semifinal round on Thursday.

Both teams struggled offensively at the outset, as Salisbury built a 6-1 advantage in the opening five minutes. The Eagles answered with a basket and two free throws from sophomore Emily Thompson and a pair of Martin free throws, and Salisbury led, 8-7, after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter, a pair of Martin free throws put the Eagles ahead, and baskets from Martin and Claire Mocarski advanced the UMW lead to 14-8 with 6:33 remaining. Salisbury used a pair of free throws with 5:05 left to draw to within 14-12, but free throws from Kendall Parker and another from Jordan Pamlanye gave UMW a 17-12 cushion with 3:35 remaining. Six straight Sea Gull points down the stretch gave the visitors the lead, but a pair of Parker free throws gave UMW the lead at intermission, 19-18.

The Eagles started the third quarter on a 7-1 run, keyed by three pointers from Mckenzie Jenkins and Parker. The Sea Gulls were able to trim the deficit to five, but each time Salisbury would look to make a run, UMW would answer. Junior Meghan Comer made a pair of baskets in the stretch, and UMW entered the fourth with a five-point lead at 37-32.

The Sea Gulls opened the fourth with a basket to draw to within three, but the Eagles were able to stretch the lead to as many as nine in the waning moments, keyed by a pair of Martin baskets. Comer's basket with 1:01 left proved to be the final points in an eight-point win.

Martin made 4-7 shots from the field, as well as all three free throw attempts. Comer scored 10, going 4-4 from the field and making 2-4 free throws. The Eagles shot 38.5% from the field (15-39), making 2-6 three point tries and 18-23 free throws. Salisbury shot 26.5% from the field (18-68), making 1-11 three pointers and 5-12 free throws.The Eagles led in rebounds, 43-35, as Pamlanye led with 10 caroms.

The Eagles will move on to face Marymount University on Thursday night in Arlington, Va., in the CAC Tournament semifinals. Game time is preliminarily set at 7 p.m. The Saints won both regular season meetings with the Eagles.
