UMW Women’s Basketball Falls to Marymount, 49-36, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team was defeated 49-36 by Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 13-12 overall, and 12-6 in the CAC. Kendall Parker led the Eagles with eight points. 

Both teams got off to a slow start in the early going as they failed to score over the first 2:37 of the game. Marymount scored the first bucket and Parker followed with a three-pointer to put UMW up 3-2. McKenzie Jenkins knocked down a three-pointer to put UMW up 6-4 with 6:12 left in the first quarter. The Saints went on a 7-0 run over a span of 5:18, to take the lead 11-6. Emily Miller made a jump shot with 13 seconds left but Marymount ended the first quarter with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to take a 14-8 lead.

UMW scored the first four points of the second quarter on layups from Taylor Barton and Tory Martin to cut the lead to two, 14-12. Marymount grew their lead to 23-14 on a free throw with 5:02 left in the half. Claire Mocarski created a spark for the Eagles as she scored four straight points to get them within five, 23-18. Marymount capped the scoring in the second quarter with a made layup to put them up 27-20.

In the third quarter, the Eagles went on an 8-4 run over the first 3:19 to cut into the lead and put them down three, 31-28. Marymount managed to score the next five points and grow the lead to 35-28 with 4:50 left. Both teams went through another scoring drought over the next 3:12 until Parker knocked down a three-pointer. Marymount closed out the third quarter with four points and they took a 39-31 lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter was tough sledding for the Eagles as they managed to only score five points. Barton kept the lead at eight, 41-33, on a layup with 7:39 remaining in the game. Miller made a free throw with 6:27 left to put the score at 43-34. Meghan Comer scored the last points for the Eagles with 2:59 left. The Saints closed out the game and won 49-36.

Jenkins, Mocarski, and Martin all scored six points a piece for the Eagles. Jordan Pamlanye led the Eagles with seven rebounds on the day. Leah Hurst and Regan Lohr both scored 11 points to lead the Saints.

UMW shot 37.5% (15-40) from the field, making 4-14 three-pointers, and 2-6 free throws. Marymount shot 36.7% (18-49) from the field, making 3-12 three-pointers, and 10-14 free throws. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday night as they will host a CAC first round game with the opponent TBA. The game will tip-off at 6 p.m.
