After St. Mary's College rallied to tie the score in the fourth quarter, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team responded with a 15-2 run to close the game in downing the Seahawks, 61-48, on Wednesday evening in Capital Athletic Conference action in St. Mary's City, Md. The Eagles improve to 10-10 overall, and 9-4 in CAC play.

The Eagles roared to an early 22-5 lead in the opening quarter. Freshman Madison Shifflett opened with a pair of three point baskets, and, after a three pointer from St. Mary's, scored the next nine points in building a 15-3 lead. Junior Jordan Pamlanye scored a pair of baskets in the run, with junior Meghan Comer adding another, and junior McKenzie Jenkins hitting a three pointer. Comer closed the frame with a pair of baskets to extend the lead to 17 after 10 minutes.

The Seahawks erupted for 21 points in the second quarter after being held to five in the first, and, after holding the Eagles to 11 points, trailed 33-26 at intermission. An 11-2 St. Mary's run to open the frame trimmed the deficit to 24-16. The teams traded points down the stretch, with the Eagles holding a seven-point edge at halftime.

The third quarter was very evenly matched, with the Eagles outscoring the hosts, 16-13. Senior Taylor Barton opened the quarter with a pair of baskets, and a two- and three-pointer from Jenkins upped the Eagle margin to 42-29 with 6:45 left. The lead swelled to 15, before St. Mary's chipped away, including scoring five points in the final 15 seconds to cut the margin to 46-42 at the end of the third.

St. Mary's tied the score in the opening minutes at 46-46, but the UMW offense and defense upped its play for a 15-2 run to end the contest. Pamlanye scored seven, with Jenkins and Barton each adding six.

Pamlanye and Jenkins each scored 12 points and Shifflett and Comer each scored 10 for the Eagles, while Comer added a team-high eight rebounds. UMW shot 48.8% from the field (21-43), making 4-13 three point tries and 15-21 free throws. St. Mary's shot 27.8% (15-54), making 4-20 three pointers and 14-25 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 39-29.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they host Penn State Harrisburg at 1 p.m. on Hall of Fame Day.
