UMW Falls to Lycoming College, 63-56, on Tuesday Afternoon in the Cruzin Classic

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team suffered a 63-56 defeat to Lycoming College on Tuesday afternoon in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. UMW moves to 4-6 on the season. Junior Jordan Pamlanye led the Eagles with 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

In the first quarter, Lycoming got off to a 4-0 lead until freshman Kayla Sakyi made a jumper to get UMW on the board 2:30 into the game. Freshman Madison Shifflett drained a three-pointer to put the Eagles down 9-7 with 5:49 remaining in the first half. From there, the Warriors went on a 13-0 run to take the lead 22-7 with 1:20 left. Pamlanye got fouled with no time left on the clock and sank two free throws to cut the lead to 22-9.

The Warriors scored the first two points of the second half, but then it was all UMW for the next 5:47, UMW went on a 16-0 run to take the lead 25-24. During that span Pamlanye scored nine points. Lycoming took back the lead 28-25, but a layup by Shifflett put the Eagles down 28-27 with 2:36 remaining in the first half. The Warriors finished on a 5-0 run to end the first half and take the lead 33-27. Pamlanye finished the half with 11 points.

In the third quarter, UMW got off to a fast start and scored the first 11 points to take the lead 38-33. McKenzie Jenkins and Meghan Comer both hit a three-pointer in that span. Lycoming regained the lead 41-40, but another three-pointer from Comer put the Eagles ahead 43-41. Senior Kendall Parker nailed a three-pointer with nine seconds left to tie the game up at 46-46 going into the fourth quarter.

Lycoming went on an 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter over the first 3:02 to take the advantage 54-48. UMW cut the lead to 55-52 on a layup by Comer with 5:29 remaining in the game. Senior Taylor Barton scooped in a layup with 1:49 left to put the Eagles down 57-56. Lycoming converted an and-1 to pull away and then made free throws down the stretch to win 63-56.

Barton scored 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Comer contributed 10 points. Lycoming was led by Morgan Mader's 15 points.

The Eagles shot 36.2% (21-58) from the field, making 5-23 three-pointers, and 9-12 free throws. The Warriors shot 34.5%(20-58) from the field, making 9-25 three-pointers, and 14-25 free throws.

UMW will be back in action tomorrow as they play Misericordia at 12 p.m. as part of the Cruzin Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
