The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 73-56 decision to York College on Saturday afternoon in York, PA. UMW falls to 2-4 overall, and 1-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles were led by Kendall Parker who scored 14 points.
In the early going, York took a slight four-point lead, 8-4, but a Taylor Barton layup with 5:32 left in the first quarter brought the Eagles within two. The Eagles tied the game with 3:52 left on a layup by Meghan Comer to tie the game up at 10-10. Freshman Kayla Sakyi drained a three pointer to give the Eagles their first lead, 13-12, with 1:19 left. The Spartans of York College scored the final three points to go up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, York scored eight straight points to go up 23-13. Two free throws from freshman Tory Martin brought the Eagles within 8, 25-17, with 5:44 left. The Spartans took their biggest lead of the first half with 2:27 remaining, 31-19. Parker made a layup with five-seconds remaining to cut the lead to 34-25 at halftime. Sakyi led the Eagles with seven points in the first half.
The Eagles came out of halftime and went on a quick 6-3 run to come within six points, 37-31, on a layup by Comer. With 5:25 left the Eagles cut the lead to two, 39-37, on a free throw from Jordan Pamlanye. After a Martin layup that kept the Eagles within two, the Spartans went on a 10-2 run in a span of 3:37 to take the lead 51-41. Comer finished a layup with 1:02 left to cut the lead to eight, but York scored four straight points in the final minute to lead 55-43 going into the fourth quarter.
Parker made a jump shot to start out the fourth quarter and put the the Eagles down 10. The Spartans made two free throws with 8:20 left to go back up 12. Over the next 2:11 both teams stalled and could not score a point, until Comer made a jump shot to make it 57-47. With 2:02 remaining in the game, Parker converted two free throws to get the Eagles within 10, 66-56. York closed out the game with seven straight points and won the game 73-56.
Sakyi finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Comer added eight points and five rebounds. Katie McGowan led the Spartans with 20 points
The Eagles shot 34.0% (18-53) from the field, making 1-15 three pointers, and 19-20 free throws. The Spartans shot 38.8% (26-67) from the field, making 5-21 three pointers, and 16-20 free throws. York had a 40-39 rebounding advantage for the game.
UMW will be back in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Southern Virginia at 5:30 p.m. in another Capital Athletic Conference contest.
