On a day when neither team shot a high percentage, the University of Mary Washington women's basketball relied on its trademark defense in gaining a 58-33 win at St. Mary's College on Saturday in both teams' regular season finale. The Eagles held the hosts to just eight second half points after trailing, 25-18, at halftime.

Both teams struggled offensively early, with the first points coming four minutes in, and were scored on a three pointer by reserve guard Claire Haeuptle - who would lead the Eagles with 16 points. The Eagles built a 7-2 lead with 12:21 remaining, and led 10-5 after the teams traded three pointers. From there, the Seahawks went on an 11-2 run to lead, 16-12, with 4:41 remaining.

A three-point play from junior Brieneke Matthes cut the deficit to one, but a 9-0 run gave the hosts a 25-15 lead late in the half. A late three-pointer from Haeuptle cut the halftime margin to 25-18.

The Eagles opened the second half on a 6-2 run, with four coming from sophomore Aubrey Howland. After a SMC layup to push their lead to 29-24, UMW went on a 14-0 run over the next six minutes, and led, 38-29, with 12:56 remaining. The run was capped by five straight points from Matthes.

A Seahawk layup with 12:35 remaining cut UMW's lead to 38-31, but St. Mary's would then go 12 minutes without a point, as the Eagles reeled off 18 straight points in that time to extend the lead to 56-33 in the final minute, and scored the final bucket for the 58-33 win.

Haeuptle led UMW with 16 points, and Matthes scored 12, both off the bench. Howland scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Carol Dye scored nine points and added 14 rebounds.

UMW shot 30% from the floor (18-60) with five three pointers, while the Seahawks shot 19.6% (11-56) with three triples. UMW led in rebounding, 55-32.

The Eagles will host either York College or Frostburg State on Thursday night in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals at 7 pm at the Anderson Center.
