UMW Women's Basketball Tops Frostburg, 53-42

Junior guard Sam Partonen scored 10 points and senior center Carol Dye added eight points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 53-42 win at Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 6-1 in league play and 14-5 overall.

Partonen provided the spark at the start, hitting a pair of three-pointers as the Eagles ran out to an early 8-0 lead. Four straight points from junior Aby Diop gave UMW a 12-2 advantage with 15:30 remaining in the first half. A late three pointer from freshman Emily Piazza gave UMW a 27-16 halftime advantage.

In the second, the Eagles ran their lead to 14 at 32-18 on a Partonen three and layup from Aubrey Howland. the Bobcats cut into the deficit, trimming the score to 34-29 with 10:29 left. But a Brieneke Matthes basket and three-point play from Claire Haeuptle returned the lead to 10, and the Bobcats could never get closer than seven the rest of the way.

UMW shot 30% from the floor (16-54), but did connect for six three pointers, while the Bobcats shot 28% (16-57) with just one long-range bucket. The Eagles won the battle of the boards, 50-34, but committed 18 turnovers.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University at 6:00 p.m.
