Junior guard Sam Partonen scored 17 points and senior center Carol Dye contributed 14 rebounds, six blocked shots, and three steals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 64-48 win over #20 Ferrum College on Wednesday night, holding the Panthers to 35 points below their season average in improving to 13-5 on the year.

The Eagles never trailed in the contest, although the going was very close in the first half, with five ties. The Eagles used an 8-0 run at the 13:04 mark, including three pointers from Claire Haeuptle and Brieneke Matthes and a layup from Haeuptle to lead, 14-6, with 11:29 remaining.

The Panthers answered with a 10-2 run to tie the score at 16 with 6:47 remaining, and a three pointer from Matthes gave UMW a three-point advantage at 21-18 with 4:01 left. After a ferrum layup, Partonen hit a free throw, and the halftime score stood at 22-20 with the Eagles in front.

In the second half, the Eagles shot a blistering 56% (14-25) from the floor, and connected on 13 free throws, while the Panthers shot just 29.6% (8-27) with 12 free throws. UMW held a 40-27 advantage in rebounding, as both teams commited 20-plus turnovers.

Partonen made five field goals and six free throws for her 17 points, while junior forward Aby Diop scored 10 points and added nine rebounds. Dye scored six points and grabbed 14 rebounds, but a series in which she blocked three straight shots in the second half turned the tide. Haeuptle and Matthes each scored nine off the bench for UMW. Ferrum was led by Katy Kipps' 15 points.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action starting at 1:00 p.m.
