Defense Leads #20 UMW Women's Basketball Past Keene State, 46-25


The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team limited Keene State College to just nine second half points on three field goals in a 46-25 victory on Wednesday in the Big Easy Challenge in New Orleans, La. The 20th ranked Eagles improve to 9-0, while the Owls fall to 6-2.

After an 11-day layoff, the Eagles shot just 5-24 in the first half (20.8%), and trailed by one at intermission, 16-15. UMW found its stroke in the second, shooting 10-24 form the field (41.7%) while limiting the Owls to 3-24 (12.5%). UMW ranks among the tops in the nation in defensive field goal percentage and opponent scoring.

The Eagles were led by senior Jenna McRae's nine points and eight rebounds, Brieneke Matthes' nine points, and Aby Diop's eight points and six rebounds. The Eagles held a 39-28 advantage on the boards. Keene State had two players with six points.

Mary Washington will return to action on Thursday when they face SUNYIT at 10:00 a.m.
