McRae, Martin Pace #24 UMW Women's Basketball Past Marymount, 63-42


Senior guard Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored 23 points, and classmate Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) made her first four three pointers en route to 14 points to lead the 24th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 63-42 win at Marymount University on Friday night in Arlington. The Eagles improve to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes, and never trailed. Four different players cored UMW's first four baskets. Three straight three pointers by Martin upped UMW's lead to 23-7 with 10:29 remaining in the half. The Saints twice cut the deficit to nine, but a late McRae three placed the Eagles lead at 34-18 at intermission.

The second half saw the Eagle lead bounce between 10 and 15 for the first 10 minutes. With 8:17 to go, UMW scored 14 straight points to lead, 59-32, with 5:40 left. McRae was the catalyst, with eight points and two assists. The Eagles led by 27 with 2:26 to go, but Marymount went 4-4 from the line and added a layup in the fional seconds for the final margin.

McRae went 9-13 from the floor and 4-4 from the line for her 23 points, and added six rebounds. Martin finished 5-7 from the floor, and 4-6 from long range. Sophomore Sam Partonen (Burke, Va., Robinson) had eight points and seven assists and soph Aby Diop (Springfield, Va., Annandale) added eight points. Senior guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored six points to go with eight rebounds and five assists.

The Eagles shot a blistering 57% from the floor (27-47) and connected for 5-19 three pointers. The Saints shot 32.6% (14-43), and made 2-10 long range attempts.

Mary Washington will be back in action on December 17 when they host Christopher Newport University at 2:00 p.m.
