Wimmer Leads UMW Women's Basketball Past Stevenson, 64-36


Senior guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) scored a game-high 18 points and freshman Aubrey Howland (Richboro, Pa., Archbishop Wood) added 10 to pace the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 64-36 win at Stevenson University in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday night in Owings Mills, Md. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Eagles jumped out to a 12-4 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, and expanded the lead to 28-14 by halftime. The second half saw UMW expand the lead to as many as 30 before settling on the 28-point win.

Wimmer went 7-12 from the floor with one three pointer, and made all three of her free throws. Howland was 4-4 from the field. Both grabbed five rebounds. Aby Diop (Springfield, Va., Annandale) led UMW with 10 boards, as the Eagles held a 40-24 margin on the glass. UMW shot 46% from the field while limiting the Mustangs to 28%, and held their fifth straight opponent under 50 points to start the year. The Eagles also blocked a season-high seven shots in the game.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State University at 2:00 p.m. in the home opener.
