Senior guards Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) and Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) each surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau within a span of 4:37 in the second half to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team past Washington & Lee University, 64-48, on Tuesday in both teams' season opener. Wimmer and McRae become the 17th and 18th players in school history to achieve the milestone.

The game began with the two teams trading the lead, but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run with the score tied at 14, including a three pointer from Brieneke Matthes and baskets from Aby Diop and McRae, to forge ahead, 21-14, and never looked back. UMW led by seven at halftime, 25-18.

The Eagles upped the lead to as many as 16 before a three-pointer by the Generals with 12:52 to go cut the deficit to eight. Wimmer then made a free throw and hit a jumper to reach her 1,000th point and return the lead to double figures at 40-29.

With 8:23 to play, McRae hit a three pointer to match Wimmer's landmark basket, and gave UMW a game-high 21-point lead, and the Eagles held on down the stretch for the 16-point win.

Wimmer led the Eagles with 16 points, while McRae added 12 and Matthes also reached double figures with 11. The Eagles shot 26-63 from the floor (41%), including 7-15 three pointers. McRae and senior Rachel Martin led the team with six rebounds apiece.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday when they face Roanoke College at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland starting at 8:00 p.m.
