The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used yet another second half surge to defeat the St. Mary's (Md.) College Seahawks 66-48 Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at the William M. Anderson Center. The Eagles led by only two points, 27-25, going into intermission before turning on the jets to pull away from the visiting Seahawks.

Junior center Carol Dye scored all eight of her points in the second half to help the Eagles pull away from a sharp shooting St. Mary's team that went 9-20 from behind the arc. Mary Washington was once again led in scoring by their tandem of senior guards, Katie Wimmer and Jenna McRae. Each scored 13 points for the Eagles, with McRae adding six assists and four rebounds for an impressive stat line. Freshman forward Aubrey Howland added 10 points and led the Eagles with seven rebounds.

The Seahawks were paced by guard Raven Owens' game-high 19 points (5-10 from long range), but it wasn't enough to overcome the balanced Eagles scoring attack. Forward Joanna Murray chipped in nine points and seven rebounds for the Seahawks, who fall to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

In a rematch of an earlier game this season in which the Eagles went on the road to St. Mary's and won by 30 points, the Seahawks looked poised early to seek revenge. But as has been the case in recent games for the Eagles, Coach Deena Applebury's team turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, holding Owens to only six points after the break. Seniors McRae and Wimmer also turned up their games after intermission to combine for 21 points for the Eagles, who improve to 20-0 overall and 11-0 in the CAC on the season.

The Eagles have the week off before returning to action next Saturday in a key match-up with Salisbury University at 2 PM in the Anderson Center.
