#13 UMW Women's Basketball Tops Wesley, 66-27, to Improve to 15-0


The 13th ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team raced to a 36-11 halftime advantage en route to a 66-27 win over visiting Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Anderson Center. UMW improves to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in league play.

The Eagles jumped out to a 28-6 lead, and led by as many as 25, which was the halftime margin. UMW shot 42% in the first 20 minutes, holding Wesley to 26% and five field goals.

The second half saw the Eagles continued to show the defense that ranks first in the nation in opponent points per game, allowing four baskets and 19% shooting. In all, the Eagles forced 22 turnovers, and won the rebounding battle, 56-20.

The Eagles were led by senior Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale)'s13 points, while senior guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) added 11 and senior center Claire Brooks (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run) added 10. Sophomore Aby Diop (Springfield, Va., Annandale) and junior Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) each grabbed 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Sam Partonen (Burke, Va., Robinson) scored eight assists and four steals. Wesley was led by Jazmine Miller's 12 points.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday with a tough nonconference matchup at Ferrum College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
