#15 UMW Tops York, 59-42, for Applebury's 200th Win


The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington saw thee players reach double figures en route to a 59-42 win over York College on Saturday in a battle of the last two undefeated teams in Capital Athletic Conference play. The win, which improves the Eagles' record to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the league, was the 200th in the nine-year career of head coach Deena Applebury.

The Eagles opened up a 15-point halftime advantage, 35-20, using a 20-2 run to end the first stanza. Seniors Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) and Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va., James Madison) each had six points in the run. The second half saw the Eagles have the lead trimmed to seven at 39-32, but bounced back with a 10-3 run and scored the final six points of the game.

UMW was led by McRae's 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Wimmer added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior center Carol Dye (Springfield, Va., Lake Braddock) scored 10 points and added six rebounds, and freshman Aubrey Howland (Richboro, Pa., Archbishop Wood) had six points and a game-high eight boards. York was led by April Sparkman's 12 points.

The Eagles shot 47% from the floor for the game, limiting York to 30%, and outrebounded the Spartans, 40-23.

The win for Applebury was her 200th in her 246th career game, moving her career winning percentage to 81.3%, among the best in all of college basketball.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Monday when they host Lehman College at 2:00 p.m.
