Five UMW Men's Athletes Named to VaSID All-State Teams; Johnson Named to First Team

Five University of Mary Washington men's athletes from the track and field team were named to VaSID All-State teams. Senior Tristan Johnson headlined the group as he was named to the VaSID first team All-State. Freshman Aman Casey, senior Jeff Gibson, senior David Danek, and freshman Garrett Dunn-Ford all were named to second team All-State.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater's Davonta Womack swept the top awards, joined by Lynchburg's Reid Sharkey as co-Track Athlete of the Year, as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released the first-ever College Division All-State Men's Indoor Track & Field team.

Womack was named both the State Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Last spring's NCAA champion in the 100 meters, Womack had the nation's top time in the 60 meters this season and was the USTFCCCA Regional Track Athlete of the Year. He was also named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Year after qualifying for NCAAs in the long jump and breaking a 20-year old ODAC meet record in the event.

Sharkey tied with Womack as Co-State Track Athlete of the Year. He was the ODAC Track Athlete of the Year after winning the mile, 3,000 meters and distance medley relay at the conference meet. He was All-Region in both the mile and 3K.

Southern Virginia's Murray Bingham was the State Track Rookie of the Year after qualifying for NCAAs in the 800 meters. He was a Capital Athletic Conference champion in the 800m and distance medley relay, and earned All-Region honors in both of those events. He set school records in two individual events and three relays.

Virginia Wesleyan's Geni Roberts was named State Field Rookie of the Year. He qualified for NCAAs and won the ODAC championship in the triple jump, while also placing fourth in the conference in the long jump. He was an All-Region qualifier in the triple jump and long jump, and was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Christopher Newport's Tyler Wingard was named State Coach of the Year, after leading the CNU men to the CAC title. His women also won the conference, and he was named the CAC Men's Coach of the Year. He coached 14 All-Region honorees and eight conference event champions.

First team All-State sprinters included Womack, Shenandoah's Elijah Morton and Lynchburg's Alex Shadkhoo. Bingham and Lynchburg's Shawn Gmurek were first team middle distance selections, and the top distance spots went to Tristan Lucy-Speidel (Lynchburg) and Jason Putnam (CNU). Virginia State's Quincy Watts was the top vote-getter in the hurdles.

Womack was also a first team All-State jumper, and was joined by Roberts, Joe O'Connor (Washington and Lee) and CJ Reeders (CNU). First team throwers were Mary Washington's Tristan Johnson and Bridgewater's Michael Lotts. BC's Chase Rosenthal was selected first team in the multi-events.

First team relay squads were W&L in the 4x400m (Alexander Caines, Jimmie Johnson, Miles Oliver and Doug Dracon), and Lynchburg in the distance medley relay (Gmurek, Jordan Short, Sam Llaneza and Lucy-Speidel). Sharkey was member of the ODAC champion team in the DMR, but that quartet ran the Hornets' fastest time of the season.

VaSID names 44 All-State teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
