UMW Softball Splits Tuesday Doubleheader at Stevenson

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Tuesday doubleheader at Stevenson University, dropping the opener, 4-3, before winning game two, 8-6, in eight innings. UMW moves to 18-17 on the season.

In the first game, Stevenson scored first with a run in the third inning, but the Eagles answered with three in the fourth. Nya Lloyd singled and moved to third on an error. After a walk to Brigid Ward, Hannah Steele singled to score one run, and Morgan Gilbert followed with a two-run single.

The Mustangs scored one run in the fifth and two in the bottom of the seventh to gain the victory. UMW was led by Caroline Bird's single and double, and Lloyd's pair of singles. Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing one earned run on seven hits in 6.2 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game,UMW fell behind, 3-0, but scored solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and tied the score in the top of the seventh on a home run by Maggie Mrowka. In extra innings, the Eagles erupted for five runs in the eighth, keyed by a Bridget Laychak home run, before holding on the for the win.

Mrowka was 3-4 with a single, double, and home run and three RBI. Laychak singled and homered, and Logan Gibson and Kayla Mann each had two hits. Freshman Taylor Hudson gained the win with six innings allowing no earned runs, with four hits and two walks while posting 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at noon.
