UMW Softball Splits Sunday DH at Lynchburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Sunday doubleheader with the University of Lynchburg, dropping the opener, 4-2, before winning the second, 7-5. The Eagles move to 17-16 on the season.

Lynchburg scored one run in the first in game one, and added three in the fifth. The Eagles scored their two runs in the sixth. Emma Dickson singled, and scored on a home run from senior Caroline Bird.

In addition to Bird's homer, freshman Nya Lloyd had two hits for Mary Washington. Sophomore Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings, with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles fell behind, 3-0, again, but this time responded with one run in the third, and two in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Senior Maggie Mrowka hit a home run in the third, and Grace Drury knocked home one in the fourth, with another coming on an error.

In the fifth, Morgan Gilbert and Mrowka singled before a sacrifice fly from Emma Schieda, and Lloyd singled home another run. The sixth saw Mrowka drive in two runs with a triple.

Mrowka was 3-3 with three RBI, while Lloyd added three more hits in game two. Gilbert, Bridget Laychak, and Brigid Ward each had two hits.

Taylor Hudson scored the win, allowing five runs on seven hits in seven innings, walking five and striking out seven.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Stevenson University at 3:00 p.m.
