UMW Softball Splits Thursday Twinbill at Lynchburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Thursday afternoon doubleheader at the University of Lynchburg, dropping the opener, 11-4, before winning game two, 4-1. UMW moves to 6-8 on the season.

In game one, the Eagles scored one in the first, as Maggie Mrowka walked, advanced to second on another walk, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep shortstop. Lynchburg scored a pair in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles responded with one in the second to tie the score at 2-2. Logan Gibson singled, advanced on a fielder's choice, and scored on a Mrowka single.

After Lynchburg scored one in the second to go back on top, 3-2, UMW again tied the score in the third. Rachel Porchie tripled and scored on a single from Emma Schieda. The Hornets responded with a run in the third and two in the fourth. UMW plated a run in the sixth, as Kimmy Thibodeau walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. Bridget Laychak connected with an RBI single to drive Thibodeau home.

Lynchburg would add five in the sixth for the 11-4 final. UMW was led by Mrowka's two singles and walk, run scored and RBI. Freshman Caitlyn Burch took the loss on seven earned runs and 13 hits, allowing two walks.

In game two, the Eagles rapped out 12 hits, kickstarted by a three-run first inning. Laychak singled and moved to third on a fielding error, and both she and Porchie scored on a Schieda double. After Grace Drury singled, Hadlea Valera knocked in Schieda with an infield single.

Lynchburg scored one in the fourth, and the Eagles got that run right back in the fifth. Porchie walked, moved to second on a Schieda single and to third on a fly ball. Valera followed with her second run-producing hit of the game to help her own cause.

SChieda had a double and two singles, and Laychak had three hits for the Eagles. Valera, in addition to her two RBI hits, allowed one run on five hits in seven inningswith no walks surrendered.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
