UMW Softball Splits Saturday DH with Gettysburg

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Gettysburg, dropping the wild opener, 17-10, before winning the second, 6-5. The Eagles move to 4-3-1 overall on the season.

In the opener, UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first. Hannah Bruns led off with a walk and moved to third on a double from Maggie Mrowka. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Mrowka scored on a sacrifice fly from Caroline Bird.

The Bullets scored once in the second, four times in the third, and twice more in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead, but the Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to draw to within 7-5, all coming on a three-run home run from Danielle Newman.

Gettysburg added a run in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead, but a three-run double from Hadlea Valera knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth. Gettysburg rallied for five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh before UMW added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Mrowka two-run double.

Mrowka led the Eagle offense with two doubles and a single, while Newman singled and homered, driving in three. Valera walked and hit her bases-clearing double. Megan Hibbs took the loss, allowing 14 earned runs on 20 hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out two.

In the nightcap, UMW built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Grace Drury singled and moved to third on an error before scoring on a single by Logan Gibson in the second, and in the third, Valera singled to drive in Newman.

Gettysburg tied the score with a home run in the fourth, but Valera knocked in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fourth as UMW reclaimed a 4-2 lead. Valera connected for a two-run homer in the sixth, before Gettysburg scored three times in the seventh before the Eagles got the third out at third base.

Valera homered and had a pair of singles, driving in five runs to help her own cause. Drury had three hits and a walk, and Mrowka singled and tripled. Valera allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings, with one walk and five strikeouts in gaining the win.

The Eagles will play a series of games in Tucson, Az. this week, starting with a doubleheader on Monday against St. John Fisher.
