Porchie's Blast Lifts UMW Softball to Split at Bridgewater on Sunday

Junior catcher Rachel Porchie belted a three-run home run in the opener as the University of Mary Washington softball team split its Sunday doubleheader at Bridgewater College on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles, who won the opener, 5-1, fell in game two, 9-2, and move to 3-1 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles allowed a run in the first inning, but in the third, Hannah Bruns singled and Danielle Newman doubled. Porchie followed with her three-run homer to put UMW ahead to stay. In the seventh, Maggie Mrowka and Caroline Bird provided RBI singles to add insurance.

Megan Hibbs picked up the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in seven innings, with seven strikeouts. She also added a pair of hits and walked twice at the plate. Newman singled, doubled, and scored twice, and Mrowka singled and doubled as well.

In game two, UMW scored first in the third, as Rachel Remer doubled to drive in Gracie Walton, but Bridgewater took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. In the fourth, UMW knotted the score at 2-2, as Bird knocked a solo home run, but Bridgewater busted the game open late to win, 9-2.

Hadlea Valera took the loss for UMW, allowing eight earned runs in six innings on 14 hits and three walks.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 2:00 p.m.
