The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a Saturday Capital Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader at York College of Pa., 1-0 and 8-1. The Eagles improve to 12-11 overall, and 2-0 in league play.

In the opener, the two pitchers dominated, as UMW's Megan Hibbs allowed just one hit in seven innings, and the Eagles were held to no hits through four innings. Rachel Porchie got the Eagles' first hit in the fifth, and UMW scored the lone run of the game in the sixth. Madi Marsden walked and advanced on a sacrifice, and scored on a run-producing single from Hannah Bruns. Daylah Sawyer added a double in the seventh for the Eagles.

Hibbs gained the one-hit shutout victory, with two walks and four strikeouts.

UMW added another in the fourth as Caroline Bird doubled and scored on a Courtney Shea single. The Eagles extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth, as Maggie Mrowka's RBI single plated Morgan Mumford.

UMW erupted for five runs in the seventh. Marsden plated a run on an error and scored on a wild pitch, before Bruns drove in another run. Mrowka then hit a two-run homer to left field to give the Eagles an 8-1 advantage which they would hold in the bottom of the inning.

Bruns, Mrowka, and Bird each had three hits for the Eagles, while Newman had two. Mrowka drove in three. Freshman Juliet Truslow gained the win, allowing one earned run on three hits in seven innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday as they host Salisbury University for a CAC twinbill at 3 p.m.
