UMW Splits Doubleheader at Salisbury on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split their doubleheader at Salisbury on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles lost the first game 4-3, and won the second 5-2. UMW is now 12-14 overall, and 1-1 in the CAC. 

In the first game, Salisbury jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning. UMW got on the board in the fifth inning as they scored two runs. Kassie Bender started the rally with a single to the left side. Raven Oten came in as a pinch runner, and Malia Rogers singled to move her to second. Both players reached third base on a wild pitch, and then Jamie Purtell singled up the middle to score both runners and take a 2-1 lead.

Salisbury tied it up in the fifth, and then took the lead 3-2 in the sixth inning. The Eagles tied the game up in the seventh inning. Rogers singled to the left side, and then Purtell walked. Hannah Bruns reached on an error by the first baseman and scored Rogers to tie the game. Salisbury won the first game, 4-3, in the seventh on a groundout to shortstop.

Kara Deppe pitched 6.2 innings, giving up just one earned run and struck out nine batters. Bruns and Rogers both recorded two hits.

In the second game, Salisbury took the lead 2-0 on a home run in the first inning. From there, Megan Hibbs settled into the game and only allowed four more hits in 4.2 innings. UMW tied the game up in the sixth inning.

Hibbs homered to lead off the inning, and then Bruns doubled to left field. Caroline Callahan bunted and Salisbury made an error as Bruns took third base. Rachel Porchie then grounded out to the pitcher, and Bruns scored to tie the game.

The Eagles took the lead in the seventh inning to win the game. Kassie Bender led off the inning with a walk, and then Deppe singled to put two runners on base. Courtney Shea laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance them. Hibbs singled up the middle to bring both of the runners home and take the lead 4-2. Bruns singled, Callahan walked, and then Morgan Mumford walked to bring in the fifth and final run for UMW. 

Purtell pitched 1.0 innings and Deppe threw 1.2 innings as she got the win. Hibbs recorded three hits, while scoring two runs and adding two RBI's.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to take on Wesley at 3 p.m.
