Kara Deppe Named as CAC Pitcher of the Week for Second Time This Season

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Leah Andrews and Mary Washington junior Kara Deppe were honored as the CAC Softball Players of the Week for March 26, 2018.

Christopher Newport senior Leah Andrews was named the CAC Player of the Week after going 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep over Meredith on Saturday. Batting in the leadoff spot, Andrews hit a home run, smacked two doubles and also stole a base. She was not retired in seven total at-bats, also getting on base with a walk, hit by pitch, and registered a sacrifice fly. Andrews notched a 1.000 batting average, .857 on-base percentage and 2.250 slugging percentage in the twinbill. The eighth-ranked Captains are now 13-3 on the season.

Mary Washington junior Kara Deppe secured CAC Pitcher of the Week accolades for the second time this year after tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Lancaster Bible on Saturday. Deppe allowed just a fifth-inning single, struck out 11 and walked two to improve to 9-2 on the season.

In the March 21 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, Christopher Newport is ranked No. 8 ... CNU sophomore Aubrey Bates struck out eight batters and threw six shutout innings in a victory over Meredith. Now 6-0 on the season, Bates scattered six hits and walked just one as the Captains upped their record to 13-3 ... Frostburg State senior Sam Gatton hit .429 with two runs and an RBI last week as Frostburg split with Salem ... Mary Washington senior CF Caroline Callahan posted four hits in six at bats with four runs scored and a pair of RBI as Mary Washington took a doubleheader from Lancaster Bible on Saturday. She stole four bases and drew a walk as well. Callahan is batting .358 on the season ... Salisbury junior Shannon Powell went the distance for the win in a 3-2 win against DePauw, striking out five and scattering seven hits in the win. Senior Kristen Yanarella went 3-for-6 in a pair of Salisbury wins against DePauw with a run scored and a double ... Southern Virginia senior Mollie Gabbert recorded an RBI in both games against Roanoke, including a double in game two. Her .333 average this week tops her season average of .224. Gabbert ranks fourth-best on the team with 10 RBIs this spring ... In her first collegiate complete game, Wesley freshman Juli Neel picked up her first win of the season against Immaculata. Neel struck out five while only walking two and allowing a run. Brandi Dalious knocked her fourth home run of the season in the second game of Wesley's doubleheader with Immaculata. Her four home runs rank second in the CAC.
