UMW Softball Splits Doubleheader vs. N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon to move to 1-3 on the young season. The Eagles won the first game 7-5, and lost the second 8-2.

In the first game, UMW got down early as N.C. Wesleyan was able to capitalize on a couple of walks and an error to take a 2-0 lead. The Battling Bishops added three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.

UMW responded with a run in the fourth as Amy Sykes reached base on an HBP and then Kassie Bender drilled a double to left field to score her. 

The Eagles mounted their comeback in the sixth inning as Rachel Porchie got the inning started on a double to left center. Malia Rogers walked and Sykes was hit by another pitch to load the bases with no outs. Porchie came around to score on a wild pitch to bring the game to 4-2.

Freshman Ashley Caffee then delivered a single to bring home Rogers and Sykes. Bender tied the game up at 5-5 as she doubled again to bring home Caffee. Courtney Shea singled down the left field line to bring home two runs and give the Eagles a 7-5 lead. Kara Deppe pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run and recorded one strikeout. Hannah Bruns, Porchie, and Bender all recorded two hits for the Eagles.

In the second game, N.C. Wesleyan scored five runs in the first inning. UMW got a run back in the first as Bruns walked and then she scored on an error by the Battling Bishops. N.C. Wesleyan added another run in the second inning and two more in the fourth to go up 8-1.

UMW got their second run in the fourth inning as Rogers walked and then Porchie doubled to left field. The game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness. Rogers recorded two hits in the game.

UMW will be back in action on Friday as they host Lancaster Bible for a doubleheader scheduled at 2:30 p.m.
