UMW Softball Sweeps Shenandoah on Saturday to Improve to 15-5

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept its Saturday doubleheader with Shenandoah University, 7-3 and 5-4, to improve to 15-5 on the season.

The Eagles allowed one run in the first of the opener, but answered with two in the bottom of the frame. Danielle Newman walked and Caroline Callahan singled, and both stole a base to put two runners in scoring position. With two out, Emma Rakowski delivered a two-run single.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third, as Callahan singled and Hannah Hautz reached on an error to put runners on the corners with one out. Rakowski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Briutnee Haynes plated both runs with a single.

The Eagles added a run in the fifth, as Callahan singled and scored on a single from Haynes. Shenandoah scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but UMW answered with two in the bottom of the inning.

Newman reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, and stole second. Callahan plated a run with a single, and Hautz followed with a run scoring double.

Callahan had four hits to lead the Eagles, while Haynes added two hits and three RBI. Erin Stinson gained the win for UMW, allowing an unearned run on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Kara Deppe allowed two unearned runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of relief with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Eagles won the nightcap, 5-4, led by Maila Rogers' three hits and three RBI. UMW went ahead with three runs in the third. Callahan singled with the bases loaded to score one run, and Hautz followed with a bases loaded walk. Rogers added an RBI single to cap the inning.

Shenandoah scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to tie the score, but UMW answered with two runs in the sixth as Rogers hit a two-run single. Shenandoah added a run in the seventh, but couldn't find the tying run.

Deppe gained the win, allowing two runs on one hit in 4.0 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Eastern Mennonite University at 1:00 p.m.
