UMW Softball Sweeps Pair in Myrtle Beach on Monday

The University of Mary Washington softball team swept a doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Monday, topping Randolph College, 3-2, in the opener, and then stopping Regis University, 11-1 in six innings, in game two.

The Eagles opened things in game one with a run in the first. Caroline Callahan singled and stole second, and scored on a Malia Rogers single. The Eagles added to their lead in the third, Callahan singled and scored on a Hannah Hautz double.

Randolph answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but UMW scored the eventual winning run in the fifth. Hannah Bruns singled and stole second before scoring on an error. Randolph cut the deficit to one in the sixth, but UMW was able to hold on for the win.

Callahan led the Eagles with three hits in four at bats with two runs scored.  Erin Stinson gained the win, scattering 11 hits in 5.1 innings, allowing two runs with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings in an 11-1 six inning win over Regis. In the first, Callahan reached on an error and scored on a triple from Hautz, who who score on a groundout.

In the second, Kate Chisholm singled and advanced on an error before scoring on a groundout. In the third, Hautz started the rally with a single and stolen base. Kara Deppe singled to score Hautz, and Deppe would score on a single from Amy Sykes.

In the fourth, Lindsey Aylor reached on an error, moved to second on a single from Sarah Manugo, and scored on another hit from Callahan. Manugo scored on a Rogers groundout.

In the sixth, Emily Greuter provided an RBI double, Deppe added a sacrifice fly, and Sykes added an RBI groundout.

Hautz, Deppe, Sykes and Chisholm all had two hits for the Eagles. Deppe went the distance in the circle, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts.

The Eagles will continue in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.
