Eagles Split Season Opening Matches; Win against Allegheny 8-2, and Fall to Roanoke 3-1

Salem, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington softball team defeated Allegheny 8-1 in the first game, before falling 3-1 to Roanoke in the second game. The Eagles are 1-1 on the season.

In the first game, UMW saw themselves behind 1-0 after a throwing error by Alex Tenney gave Allegheny the lead. But the Eagles answered in the bottom half of the inning. Bireet Chitty tied the game up with a home run to left center, tying the game at 1-1.

An Olivia Tatara walk to open the second inning, followed by an Emily Briggs single put a runner in scoring position to open up the inning. The Eagles cashed in with an error by Allegheny allowed Tatara to score, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Tenney came right back and scored Briggs on a single. Zoie Patrick hit a sac fly later in the inning to score Tenney. Scites would come up with Taylor Bass on second, and hit her home with a single to center. Hannah Williams also scored on the play.

Briggs woud come back up, and reach on a fielding error, allowing Scites to score, giving the Eagles a 7-1 lead after two. Allegheny would homer the next half inning, but the Eagles got a run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win, 8-2.

The Eagles turned around to play Roanoke, and only managed three hits in the 3-1 loss.

UMW returns to the diamond tomorrow, with a double dip against Stevenson beginning at 1:00 p.m at UMW.
