UMW Softball Splits with CNU

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Christopher Newport University at the Battleground Thursday afternoon. The Eagles opened with a 3-2 come from behind win, improving to 13-10 overall, before falling in the second game 9-3.

The Eagles fell behind early in game one but rallied in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to carry the team to victory. Sophomore Bireet Chitty started the rally with a single, followed by a double by Junior Brandee Adams and a single by Junior Kerry Busby scoring the Eagles' first run of the game. The next batter was senior clean-up hitter Morgan Lamon who doubled to centerfield driving in the tying and go ahead runs. The Eagles never looked back from there. Freshman pitcher Hannah Otterman was stellar, picking up her second win in as many days. Otterman threw her second straight complete game with seven strong innings while giving up only one earned run and striking out four.

In game two, the Eagles' bats came out hot, scoring three runs in the first inning. In the third inning, CNU tied the game, eventually taking a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning and then sealed the game scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Freshmen Brittany Scites led the Eagles with one hit and two RBI. Lamon added one hit and one RBI, while Junior Brandee Adams picked up two hits and scored a run. Junior Annie Blaine was handed the loss giving up four earned runs and five hits in two innings.

The Eagles return to conference play on Saturday when they host Wesley College at 12:30.
