Moses Hutchison Named UMW Male Athlete of the Year

Graduating senior men's tennis All-America selection Moses Hutchison has been named as the 2021-22 University of Mary Washington Male Athlete of the Year.

A three year All-American, Hutchison capped his brilliant career this season by gaining All-America honors in both singles and doubles. In singles play, he finished with a 19-13 record overall, including a 16-9 mark against nationally-ranked Division III opponents. He advanced to the ITA Cup in the fall, where he won two of three matches to clinch All-America, and in the spring was invited to the NCAA singles championship for the second time.

In doubles, Hutchison and partner Andrew Watson gained All-America honors in the fall by winning their ITA Regional and advancing to the ITA Cup, and in the spring, advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship, the furthest advancement for a UMW duo since 2012. Hutchison and Watson finished the year with a 26-8 record, including a 24-5 mark against Division III foes.

A three year #1 singles and three-year #1 doubles player, Hutchison wrapped his career with 71 singles wins and 91 doubles wins. His 162 career wins rank 4th all time in Mary Washington history.  He has gained Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, as well as the ITA National Player to Watch in his career.

"Moses has been a very hard worker throughout his career. Team leader. Coachable. Moses came to UMW as an average junior player who has turned into one of the best ever in Mary Washington tennis history through hard work, improved confidence, and determination."
