#20 UMW Men’s Tennis Defeats #15 N.C. Wesleyan, 7-2, in Home Opener

The twentieth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated fifteenth-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College, 7-2, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles open the season 1-0.

In doubles action, Patrick Hughes and Mike Fleming got the opening point as they won at three doubles 8-4. N.C. Wesleyan tied the match at one a piece as they won 8-7 (5) at one doubles. UMW took a 2-1 advantage as Derek Hagino and Ryland Byrd won 8-4 at two doubles.

Matt Miles put UMW up 3-1 as he won at the one spot, 6-2, 7-5. Cole Tecce won 7-5, 6-1 at six singles and then Fleming clinched the match for UMW at the three spot by winning 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Hughes kept it going as he won 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at the two spot. Moses Hutchison earned a win at the four spot by winning, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-6. N.C. Wesleyan took the win at the five spot, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 5-10.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday as they will host George Mason in an exhibition match at 6 p.m.
