UMW Men's Tennis Opens 2018-19 With Winning Mark at St. Joseph's Invite

The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team opened the 2018-19 season at the St. Joseph's University Invitational, posting winning marks in singles and doubles against a primarily-Division I field of competitors.

In singles, senior Matt Miles won in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-8, while Patrick Hughes topped Patrick Pascal of LaSalle, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Tyler Kane topped Astro Marcano of Delaware, 6-3, 6-0. 

In doubles, Ryland Byrd and Derek Hagino won, 8-4, against a duo from LaSalle before falling to Villa Nova, 8-6. Joseph Brown and Michael Fleming defeated a duo from Johns Hopkins, 8-6, to advance to Saturday, and Kane and Priyan DeSilva won twice to advance to Saturday, as they topped Villanova, 8-5, and won in the second round, 8-6.

Play will continue at the event on Saturday.
