#14 UMW Men’s Tennis Defeats Southern Virginia, Frostburg St. on Wednesday

The fourteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated Southern Virginia University and Frostburg State University on Wednesday afternoon. Half of the Eagles defeated SVU 8-1 in Fredericksburg, Va., and the other half won at Frostburg St. 6-3. UMW improves to 14-2 on the season, and 5-0 in the CAC.

Against SVU, UMW played singles and won all six matches. Matt Miles won at one singles 6-0, 6-1; Ryland Byrd won at two singles 6-2, 6-4; Derek Hagino won at three singles 6-3, 6-1; Cole Tecce won at four singles 6-3, 6-4; Ryan Berry won at five singles 4-6, 7-5, 10-5; and Max Fritsch won at six singles 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles action, UMW dropped only one match. Miles and Hagino won at one doubles 8-4 while Byrd and Berry won at two doubles 9-7. SVU won at three doubles 8-4.

At Frostburg St., UMW took two doubles matches. Michael Fleming and Moses Hutchison won one doubles 8-1, and Joseph Brown and Patrick Hughes won at two doubles 8-1. 

In singles action, UMW took control as they won four out of the six matches. Hughes won at one singles 6-1, 6-2; Brown won at two singles 6-2, 6-2; Fleming won at three singles 6-0, 6-1; Hutchison won at four singles 6-0, 6-1. The Bobcats won five singles 6-1, 6-1 and won six singles by default.

UMW will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to Salisbury for a match at 4 p.m.
