Noah Carpenter Named 2019-20 Winter Male Athlete of the Year

Senior men's swimming standout Noah Carpenter has been named as the 2019-20 Winter Male Athlete of the Year at the University of Mary Washington.

Carpenter turned in an epic season for the Eagles, going undefeated in every race he swam during the course of the entire season in conference competition, including in the CAC Championships, where the Eagles won their 20th consecutive league title.

A four-time conference champion this winter, he was named as CAC Swimmer of the Week on two occasions, and was named as the team's Most Valuable Player. He ranks in the top 20 in school history in 10 individual events, and became the first swimmer in school history to break 1:00 in every 100 yard stroke, in addition to breaking 4:00 in the 400 yard individual medley (1:00 per stroke). He gained more points for his team than any swimmer in the CAC over the course of the season.

In addition, he is a two-time Academic All-American, and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships in two events.

"Noah is an intelligent, analytical, hard-working, driven and competitive individual with an impeccable track record of performance and dedication to our swim team and the UMW community", said head coach Justin Anderson. "Noah consistently works above and beyond expectations. This past year and over the last four years he has put in extra work in the pool, and weight room, and especially this year became one of the best all-around swimmers in the men's team history."

This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UMW Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards will be divided into each of the three sports seasons (fall, winter, and spring). The Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards will be released as usual following the posting of final grades in May.
