UMW Men's Soccer Tops Salisbury, 5-3, in C2C Matchup

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated Salisbury University, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at a windy Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles improve to 7-3-2 on the season.

UMW fell behind, 2-0, by a pair of goals by Salisbury through the first part of the first half, but UMW cut the lead in half on the foot of Aidan Shell, the feed coming from Abel Luwis at 14:54. At 18:04, Josh Kirkland took a feed down the middle of the pitch from Nelsar Castillo to even the score. UMW then continued their scoring bout with three more goals from Juan Vargas, Julian Schmugge, and Kirkland, respectively.

The Eagles led in shots, 18-5, as well as corner kicks, 7-2. UMW senior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made one save on the day for the Eagles in 81:38 minutes of play, with Altan Murray finishing off the last 8:22 of the game. Salisbury goalkeeper Zach Walega was between the posts for half one, while Ryan Socks came in for the later 45:00. 

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesay afternoon, as the Eagles host St. Mary's College (Md) at 3:30 p.m.
