Bennett, Burke Lead UMW Men's Soccer to 2-0 Win at Southern Virginia; Spencer Ties Season Shutout Record

Senior Mike Bennett and junior Jacob Burke scored a pair of goals 46 seconds apart in the first half to give the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team a 2-0 victory at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday in Buena Vista, Va. Sophomore Matt Spencer tied the school record with his ninth shutout of the season, as the Eagles improve to 10-4 on the season, and 3-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles played high pressure on the Knights throughout the first half, but were unable to score for the first 35 minutes of action. At 35:03, Bennett scored unassisted, and just 46 seconds later, Burke scored on a Gavin Jelinek assist at 35:49. The Eagles led, 2-0, at intermission, after outshooting the hosts, 15-1.

In the second half, play evened out considerably, with the Eagles holding a 7-5 shot advantage, with nieither team solving the others' defense.

The Eagles led in shots, 22-6, and in corner kicks, 14-0. Spencer, who ties Ryan Wilvert and Liam Garland with nine shutouts on the year, made two saves for the Eagles. Keenan Carroll had six saves for Southern Virginia.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Salisbury University at 3:30 p.m. for Win 4 Wesley Day as well as Senior Day.
