Burke's Two Rapid Scores Lead UMW Men's Soccer Past William Patterson, 2-1, on Friday in New Jersey

Junior Jacob Burke scored a pair of goals midway through the first half, just 2:30 apart, to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over William Patterson University on Friday night at Richard Stockton University in New Jersey. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season for their best start since 2007.

Burke opened the scoring at 26:13, scoring unassisted, for his first score of the year. Then, just 2:30 later, Burke was at it again, scoring again unassisted to give UMW a 2-0 advantage, which the Eagles rode to halftime.

In the second, neither team was able to score until Patterson scored on a header from Musa Sackoon at 81:46. But the Eagles withstood the late charge, and held on for their fifth straight win to start the season.

William Patterson held a 12-9 shot advantage, while the Eagles held a definitive edge on corner kicks, 8-1. Matt Spencer had two saves for Mary Washington, while Mike Villegas had no saves for WPU.

The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, as they face host Richard Stockton University at 5:30 p.m.
