UMW Men's Soccer Tops Catholic, 5-1, in Wednesday Nonconference Action

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead, and never looked back in a 5-1 victory over visiting Catholic University on Wednesday at the Battleground. Five different players scored for the Eagles, who improve to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 6:14, when Carlos Mendoza took a feed from Conor Nogueira and beat the goalkeeper. UMW added another score at 20:13 on a Nick Shepherd penalty kick after a hand ball in the penalty area. The Eagles led, 2-0, at intermission.

Catholic started the second half with great effort, gaining several chances. But a UMW counter at 50:34 with sophomore Riley Fisher scoring on a Nogueira assist upped the Eagle lead to 3-0. The Cardinals answered with a score at 60:05 from Tyler Zimmerman, but UMW found scores from Jacob Keller in the 76th minute and freshman Brandan Herlinger in the 81st minute for the 5-1 margin.

The Eagles led in shots, 12-11, after outshooting the Cardinals, 5-1, in the first half. UMW led in corner kicks, 3-1, and freshman goalie Matt Spencer had six saves for UMW. Catholic's Steven Lukas had two stops.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit Kean University at 1:00 p.m.
