UMW Men's Rugby Tops Welsh Engineers in Preseason Test, 21-14

In an extremely hard fought match UMW got the preseason test they needed beating the Welsh Touring Side, REME, 21-14.

UMW was very happy to get a match against this talented group prior to their Rugby East schedule - REME posted a big score earlier in the week against one of the area's better mens sides so UMW came ready to play.

REME, a military association, featured quite a few big and mobile backline players and a punishing pack. UMW countered by moving the ball side to side and taking advantage of every scoring chance offered.

Sophomores Sebastian Schefermann, Bill Tamani and Conn Foster scored well-worked and hard-earned first half try's - all of which were converted by Schefferman. The Welshmen scored a nice try when one of their back broke UMW's line to score under the post. Halftime was 21-7 UMW.

The second half featured a lot of defense from both teams, REME finally breaking UMW down to score. After an extended stand UMW finally forced a REME turnover and and kicked the ball out on a penalty.

Flanker Tobey Barnfield-Lee was UMW's man of the match, forcing multiple turnovers against the bigger REME side. Lloyd Stephens at 6 and Kit Waddington at scrumhalf also played solid games. Michael Gray played a very solid game at flyhalf, tackling like a flanker and distributing the ball well throughout.

Next game is Sept 10 when UMW travels to Wheeling, WV to take on fellow D1A side Wheeling University.
