UMW Men's Lax Falls at Southern Virginia,18-15 , on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped an 18-15 decision at Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 2-8 overall, and 0-5 in league play.

The Knights started the game with a flourish, scoring three goals in the opening 2:16 en route to a 4-0 early lead. The Eagles chipped away, as J.D. Nozemack scored with 9:41 remaining in the first to kickstart a three-goal run. J.C. Reynolds followed at 6:53, and again with 2:02 remaining to cut the score to 4-3 after 15 minutes.

AFter an SVU goal to start the second, UMW answered to again draw to within one, as Kiernan Field scored with 13:39 left. After SVU scored to again go up two, UMW tied the score with goals from Garrett Keogh at 11:33, and Kevin Cruz on a Jack-Henry asisst with 11:09 before halftime. The Eagles went ahead at 7:41, as Logan Green scored, but the Knights scored three straight to go back in front. The Eagles again tied the score before halftime, with scores from Cameron Walker and Nozemack.

Walker scored in the opening minute of the third quarter to put UMW back in front, 10-9, but SVU rallied with four straight to take a 13-10 advantage. Ethan Castleman scored on a Nozemac assist with 11:34 left in the third, but the Knights closed the quarter with two scores to take a 15-11 lead to the fourth quarter.

Nozemack got the Eagles to within 15-12 in the opening minute of the fourth on a feed from Grant Cragg, but the Knights scored two more over the next four minutes to build a lead of 17-12 with 10:08 left.

Nozemack drew the Eagles to within four with 7:06 left, and Kristophe Newman added another with 6:13 remaining, to cut the deficit to 17-14. Nozemack got the Eagles to within two with 3:18 left with his fifth goal of the game, but SVU scored with 1:19 left, and held on for the three-score win.

The Eagles led in shots, 51-49, while the Knights collected 46 ground balls, to 32 for UMW. Riley Green had 16 saves in goal for UMW, while Noah Smith played eight minutes of relief.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College at 5 p.m.
