UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at #9 CNU, 16-7, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 16-7 decision at ninth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, Va. in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 1-6 on the season, and 0-3 in league play.

The Captains jumped ahead with a 3-0 after the first quarter. Junior J.D. Nozemack got the Eagles on the board to start the second quarter, scoring a man up goal with 14:45 left on an Ethan Castleman assist. CNU answered with six straight goals to take a 9-1 lead before Cameron Walker scored on a Nozemack assist with 6:23 left before halftime. The Captains added another score to lead, 10-2, at intermission.

Castleman opened the third quarter with his first of the day with 13:56 remaining on a Nozemack pass. After three more CNU tallies, Jackson Davis scored for the Eagles on a Nozemack assist with 7:01 left. Nozemack added another man-up score after a Captains goal before the hosts scored twice more to carry a 16-5 lead to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Hunter Tipton scored for the Eagles with 9:58 left unassisted before Will Mortimer scored on a Bennett Miller pass with 8:26 remaining to cap the scoring.

The Captains led in shots, 66-24, and ground balls, 47-22. Riley Green had 17 saves in 45 minutes for UMW, with Bode Weber adding four stops in 13 minutes and Nicholas Balducci didn't see a shot in two minutes of relief.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they host St. Mary's College at 3:00 p.m. in another conference matchup.
