UMW Men's Lacrosse Picked Fifth in C2C Preseason Coaches' Poll

Salisbury was unanimously voted atop the 2021 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Men's Lacrosse Preseason Poll, receiving four first-place votes and 16 points in a vote among the conference head coaches. The Sea Gulls have advanced to atleast the national semifinal round each of the last four seasons, including back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.

Christopher Newport ranked second in the poll with 13 points and received the final first-place vote, followed by St. Mary's (9), Southern Virginia (8) and Mary Washington (4) in third through fifth, respectively. 

The C2C Tournament will feature all five programs this spring starting with the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup on Monday, May 3. The semifinal round with take place Wednesday, May 5 and culminate with the championship game on Saturday, May 8.

Below is a brief preview of each team entering the 2021 campaign: 


1) SALISBURY enters the 2021 season as the top-ranked team in the nation, according to the USILA and U.S. Lacrosse preseason rankings. The Sea Gulls return all eight media All-Americans from 2020, including 2019 National Faceoff Specialist of the Year and then-CAC Player of the Year senior Brett Malamphy. Malamphy and senior defenseman Brad Apgar were selected as Preseason Players of the Year by U.S. Lacrosse Magazine.


2) CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT enters the 2021 campaign ranked 13th in the USILA Preseason National Coaches Poll. Under the guidance of head coach Mikey Thompson, the Captains return All-Americans Phoenix Hines, Dylan Rice, and Max Wayne as well as Inside Lacrosse National Freshman of the Year Alex Brendes. Overall, the team welcomes back its top-11 scorers from last season as well as 11 of the 12 players who earned at least one start in 2020.

3) The ST. MARY'S COLLEGE OF MARYLAND men's lacrosse team heads into their 2021 campaign after a shortened 2020 season where they finished the year with a 5-3 record. The Seahawks, led by sixth year head coach Jason Childs, return 33 student-athletes from last year's roster including nine starters. One of those starters is attackman Jude Brown, who was named a 2020 Maverik Men's Lacrosse DIII Media All-American. St. Mary's College welcomes 13 newcomers to their roster.

4) In just eight games last season, SOUTHERN VIRGINIA  netted an impressive 148 goals. At the same time, the defense stood tall, shutting down the opposition allowing the team to outscore their opponents 148-91. As leaders on offense and defense, the seniors helped guide the men's lacrosse team in becoming nationally ranked in multiple statistical categories.


5) MARY WASHINGTON will look to a talented squad of returnees, led by 2020 leading scorers Kevin Cruz, J.D. Nozemack, and Kristophe Newman. Defensively, the Eagles will look to one of several talented newcomers to fill the void left by the graduation of its goalie tandem from a season ago. Senior defenders Jamin Lane and Jack-Henry Smith will take charge in front of the new keeper.
