Billy Senicola Named CAC Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Matthew Crist and Mary Washington junior Billy Senicola secured CAC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week awards for April 2, 2018.

Christopher Newport senior Matthew Crist was selected as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this year after posting six goals and seven assists in a 1-1 week for the Captains. On Wednesday against No. 18 Roanoke, Crist contributed six points, including four goals. His second point of the contest, which came on an assist in the second quarter, marked the 186th of his career. That established a new program record, topping the previous mark of 185 set by Will Geise from 2013-17. On Saturday, he returned to the field with a seven-point effort during a CAC victory over St. Mary's. His five assists against the Seahawks equaled the fifth-highest single-game total in program history, while his seven total points matched the program's 10th-best mark.

Mary Washington junior Billy Senicola secured CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after stopping 10 shots in the Eagles' 8-7 overtime win over Frostburg State on Thursday. Senicola posted a save percentage of 58.8% in 60:42 of work between the pipes in the victory.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

York is ranked No. 2, Salisbury is ranked No. 11, and Christopher Newport is ranked No. 15 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) rankings ... CNU's Tony Cruz won 77% of his faceoffs last week, going 33-of-43. He also secured a team-high 17 ground balls. Against No. 18 Roanoke on Wednesday, Cruz was nearly flawless as he won 16 of the game's 19 faceoffs while collecting nine rollers. On Saturday, he wrapped up his week with a 17-for-24 performance at St. Mary's while nabbing eight ground balls. He also tallied his second goal of the season with a first-half strike in the victory over the Seahawks ... Frostburg State senior Keegan Colegrove scored four goals and handed out three assists in two games last week ... Mary Washington senior Owen Dingman scored the game-winning goal in overtime of an 8-7 win over Frostburg State as part of a two-goal and two-assist effort, and also added a goal in UMW's 18-4 win over Wesley, as the Eagles improved to 3-0 in CAC action. Dingman has posted 19 goals and 12 assists in 13 UMW games this season ... St. Mary's junior Ray LaPlaca tallied his fourth hat trick of the season with game-highs of three goals and four points against Eastern before dishing out a career-best three assists against Christopher Newport. LaPlaca finished the week with four ground balls as well ... Emory Wongus netted a team-best seven goals during Salisbury's 2-0 week. Wongus score twice against Wesley and followed up that performance with a career-high five goals against Southern Virginia in a 22-9 victory. Against the Knights, Wongus tallied six shots all of which were on net to post a shooting percentage of 83.3%. For the week Wongus tallied seven points, a shot percentage of 77.8, and a shot on goal percentage of 88.9. T.J. Logue turned in an impressive week for the Sea Gulls from the faceoff X. Logue posted a 25-for-32 mark for the maroon and gold winning 78.1 percent of his face-offs. Against Southern Virginia, he won a season- and career-high 16 face-offs to aid in the victory. For the season, Logue is winning 56.0 percent of his face-offs, which currently ranks him fourth in the CAC ... Southern Virginia freshman Seth Garff led the Knights with two goals and two assists in the loss at Salisbury. Garff ranks fourth in CAC with 27 goals this season ... York defeated Elizabethtown 13-5 in its lone contest of the week. Senior Matt Whitcher tallied three goals, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while junior J.D. Beck collected a career-high four caused turnovers and two ground balls as the Spartan defense limited the Blue Jays to just one goal through three quarters of play. The York defense forced the Blue Jays into a season-high 27 turnovers.
