UMW Men's Lax Falls to York in CAC Tourney 1st Round, 9-8

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but couldn't hold on in a 9-8 loss to York College in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday at a rainy Battleground Field. The Eagles season comes to a close with a 10-5 record.

The Eagles gained all of the momentum early, scoring the first three goals. Paul Tunick opened the scoring on a Sean Dacey assist with 11:30 remaining, and Dacey followed with 6:42 to play on a feed from Billy Kelly. Tunick scored again with 5:41 left in the quarter to give UMW a 3-0 advantage. York scored two of the final three goals of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 4-2 after 15 minutes.

The Eagles extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans, 2-1. Luke Dick scored on a John Bohlinger assist with 11:11 to play, and Bohlinger followed unassisted with 8:32 remaining in the half. York added a late goal to cut the halftime margin to 6-3.

Mary Washington scored first to open the third, as Dacey scored unassisted with 11:40 on the clock. But from there, the Spartans took over, scoring six straight goals (including four man-up scores) to take a 9-7 lead with 10:31 remaining. The Eagles were able to net a goal with 2:29 left as Dacey scored again, but UMW was unable to find the tying score despite several late shots in the final minute.

Dacey led the Eagles with three goals and one assist, while Tunick scored twice for UMW. York was led by Tyler Hutson's three goals and one assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 42-26, and in ground balls, 41-30, but York held a commanding lead in faceoffs, 15-4. Senior goalie Matt Prin had 10 saves in goal for the Eagles. UMW finishes the season one win shy of the school record for season wins.
