UMW Men Fall to York, 74-71, on Saturday in CAC Battle

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 74-71 decision to visiting York College of Pa. in a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at Ron Rosner Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 14-10 overall and 4-5 in CAC play.

After York scored the game's first basket, the Eagles scored 13 straight points, with three pointers from Da'Shawn Cook, Anias Saunders, and Drew Johnson. The Soartans answered with a pair of threes, but Cook hit another to keep the Eagles ahead at 16-9 with 14:08 remaining. The teams traded three pointers, with Johnson hitting his second of the day, before Cook hit another to build the Eagle advantage to 22-12 with 13:02 left.

The offenses cooled a bit after that, and traded baskets in the coming minutes. York trimmed the margin to 27-23 on a three pointer with 6:44 to go, but a pair of Greg Rowson free throws and another three from Saunders returned the lead to nine with 5:06 left in the half. A Johnson layup capped the half scoring, giving UMW a 38-28 lead at intermission.

Three pointers from Cook and Saunders held the Spartans at bay in the opening minutes of the second, and five straight points from Riley Welch kept the lead at 11 minutes later. Three free throws from Rowson and a Welch bucket gave UMW a 56-40 lead with 12:40 remaining.

The Spartans cut into the lead with a pair of free throws and a three point play, and the Eagle elad was down to six with a Spartan three with 10:32 to play. A Cook three with 8:06 gave the Eagles a 64-56 lead, and the lead stood at nine with 5:19 left. York hit a three to draw to within six, and followed with a layup and three to draw within one with 4:00 left. York took its first lead since the opening minute with a pair of free throws with 2:58 left, and two more baskets pushed their lead to five. A Cook three pointer with 17 seconds left drew UMW to within two, but York converted a free throw and the Eagles missed the tying shot at the buzzer.

Cook led the Eagles with 20 points on 7-14 shooting (6-10 three pointers), while Rowson scored 14 and Johnson 12. The Eagles shot 24-59 from the floor (40.7%), making 12-26 three point attempts and 11-15 free throws. York shot 24-60 (40%), and made 11-36 three point tries and 15-19 free throws. York held a 41-36 edge in rebounding.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University in the regular season finale at 7 p.m.
