Rowson, Cook Lead UMW Men’s Basketball Past St. Mary’s, 72-62

Sophomore Greg Rowson scored 23 points and sophomore Da'Shawn Cook added 14 points to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team past St. Mary's College, 72-62, on Saturday evening in St. Mary's, MD. The Eagles improve to 14-9 overall on the season and 4-4 in the CAC. 

Rowson got the scoring going for the Eagles as he poured in the first five points of the game. SMC scored the next six points to take a 6-5 lead and from there UMW went on a 13-0 run. Trey Barber, Rowson, Colin Coyne, and Ra'Shawn Cook all contributed points in that run. 

Anias Saunders scooped home a layup with 7:43 to play that gave the Eagles a 28-14 advantage. Barber made a layup with 4:37 remaining to keep UMW up 12, 32-20. St. Mary's finished on an 8-4 run to close the half and put the score at 34-28.

Saunders extended the Eagles' lead to nine, 38-29, just 1:13 into the second half. Drew Johnson drained a three-pointer to put UMW back up 12, 49-37, with 12:29 remaining. SMC cut UMW's lead to just three, 54-51, with 8:10 left in the game. 

D. Cook pushed the Eagles' lead to six on a made layup with 5:11 to play. The Seahawks got within four with 3:57 left, but a Barber free throw and a three-pointer from D. Cook put UMW up 66-58 with just under three minutes left. The Eagles knocked down some free throws from there to close out the game.

In addition to Rowson's 23 points, he also pulled down 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Johnson and Saunders both chipped in eight points a piece on the night. 

UMW shot 25-62 (40.3%) from the field, 10-33 (30.3%) from three-point range, and 12-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line. The Eagles grabbed 40 rebounds and dished out 12 assists. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will host York for a key CAC matchup at 3 p.m.
