UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at #14 Whitworth, 78-73, on Monday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at #14 Whitworth University, 78-73, on Monday evening in Spokane, Washington. The Eagles slip to 7-3 on the season. Sophomore Greg Rowson led the team with 32 points on 10-18 shooting from the floor, including 12-13 from the free throw line. 

After an early bucket by Whitworth in the early going, the Eagles scored six straight points to jump ahead in the first 3:12 of the game. Rowson accounted for four of those points and Trey Barber threw down a dunk in that run. Rowson grew UMW's lead to six, 13-7, as he knocked down a pull-up jumper with 12:19 to play. 

The Pirates then went on a 13-0 run over the next six minutes of play to take a 20-13 advantage. With 4:53 remaining, Drew Johnson converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to pull the Eagles within four, 22-18.

Whitworth extended their lead to 31-22 with 2:12 left in the half. From there, Rowson scooped home two layups and Riley Welch knocked down UMW's first three-pointer to get within two, 31-29, with 44 seconds to play. Whitworth knocked down two free throws at the end of the half and went into the break with a 33-29 lead. 

The Eagles came out hot in the second half as they went on a 10-3 run to take a 39-36 lead. In the run Barber, Anias Saunders, and Rowson accounted for the 10 points. The rest of the half played out as a tight one with neither team gaining more than a seven point lead. 

With 12:29 to play in the half, Barber scooped home a layup to put UMW up 49-46. The Pirates answered with a 10-0 run to go up 56-49 with 8:28 remaining in the game. The Eagles weren't done there though as they fought back and tied the game at 66 a piece on a Drew Johnson layup. The teams went back and forth scoring the next two possessions and the game remained tied at 70 after Rowson knocked down two free throws.

Whitworth got the benefit of two calls and ended up going up 76-70 with seven seconds left in the game. Johnson made a three-pointer with five seconds to play to cut the lead to 76-73. Whitworth sealed the game with two free throws to win 78-73.

Johnson added 10 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Saunders finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Barber chipped in nine points and five rebounds.

The Eagles shot 26-65 (40.0%) from the field, 3-30 (10.0%) from the three-point line, and 18-19  (94.7%) from the free throw line. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Pacific (Ore.) for a game at 7 p.m. PST.
