Drew Johnson Earns Second Straight CAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the second week of the 2019 men's basketball season. Mary Washington junior forward Drew Johnson earned CAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week accolades for the second straight week.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Drew Johnson - Mary Washington

Mary Washington junior forard Drew Johnson averaged 16.0 PPG and 10.3 rebounds as Mary Washington won three games this week to claim the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament and improve to 4-0 on the season. Johnson scored 16 points with 11 rebounds, his second double-double in as many games this year, in an 82-55 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday. He then scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards in a 65-42 win over Merchant Marine. He closed the week with 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-64 win over Eastern. He was named the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament MVP.

LEAGUE NOTES

Christopher Newport junior guard Jason Aigner was named MVP of the Franklin & Marshall Tournament after pouring in 15 and 19 points against Marywood and F&M, respectively ... Also reached double figures in a win against Shenandoah earlier in the week ... Averaged 16 points while shooting 50% (16-32) from the field including 51.9% (14-27) from three-point range ... Added nine assists, three steals and seven rebounds while helping the Captains go 3-0 on the week...York senior Jared Wagner led the Spartans to a 2-1 week and an appearance in the Dick Leftwich Tip Off Tournament championship game. He opened his season with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals in 27 minutes in the season-opening win at Dickinson. He was 7-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three and 3-for-5 from the line in the victory. He followed that with 10 points, two rebounds, three assists, and one steal in the semifinal win over Johnson & Wales. In the win, he became the 26th Spartan to reach 1,000 career points as his second half lay up pushed him over the milestone. He finished the week with 20 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals in the championship game loss to Roanoke on Saturday. For the week, Wagner averaged 16 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 0.7 blocked shots per game. He shot 58.6% from the floor and 68.4% from the free throw line...St. Mary's senior guard Milstead led the Seahawks with 17 points per game this week. He recorded 12 in an exhibition loss at UMBC and led the team in scoring in a win against Catholic (18 pts) and a tight loss against Hood (21 pts) in the Battle of DC & Maryland Championship game. In addition, Milstead averaged 3.7 rebounds per game, two assists per game, and 2.3 steals per game...Southern Virginia senior guard Sam Armstrong led the Knights' offense this past week as he averaged 18.3 points per game. He tallied a career-high 28 points at the Gettysburg Tournament while adding an impressive seven three's from deep. Armstrong was named to the All-Tournament team as he averaged 22.5 points per game, 1.5 steals per game, and two assists per game. He shot on the week 38.5 percent from behind the arc while going 40.5 percent from the floor...Salisbury junior guard Gary Briddell recorded double figures in Salisbury's 1-1 week. Briddell tallied a team-high 16 points in the Sea Gulls' 74-62 win over Stockton. Briddell followed that performance with a 14-point effort against Yeshiva. He totaled eight rebounds and four steals in the two games last week.
