UMW Men's Basketball Tops Apprentice, 82-74

Mary Washington pulled out to an early 9-0 lead over Apprentice School and never looked back in the final game of the UMW Tip-Off Classic Saturday in the Willam M. Anderson Center. The Builders took the lead at 44-43 in the opening moments of the second half, but the Eagles pulled away with a 13-0 run over the next six minutes and played well enough to earn their first win of the young season, 82-74.

Sophomore Matt Boward (Manassas, Va., Forest Park) led the Eagles with 19 points. Sophomore Bradley Riester (Richmond, Va., Monacan) added 14 points and four steals off the bench for the Eagles, who improve to 1-1 on the season with the victory. Senior Henry Brisibe (South Riding, Va., Freedom) and Freshman Sean Armstrong (Richmond, Va., Monacan) paced the Eagles on the boards with nine apiece.

The Builders put four players in double figures, led by Lance Darden's 15. Guard Tevin Andrews and forward Isaih Harrison each added 13 for Apprentice School, which drops to 5-1 after their first loss of the season.

In a wild game that saw a total of 47 turnovers and 52 fouls, the Eagles proved they could hit their free throws down the stretch, something they failed to do in Friday night's season opener against Christopher Newport. The Eagles shot 66 percent from the foul line, a big improvement from the previous night's 46 percent.

The Eagles will be in action again Monday night as they visit the Captains from Christopher Newport in a rematch of Friday's overtime thriller. Tip-off will be 7:30.
