Senior guard Mike Harvey scored the eventual game winning basket on a three pointer with 56 seconds remaining as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated St. Mary's College, 67-65, on Saturday in a battle of the two top teams in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Eagles improve to 15-5 overall and 10-1 in CAC play, while the Seahawks slip to 14-6 and 8-3.

In a back and forth battle throughout, St. Mary's landed the first punch with a 9-1 run to start the game. UMW scored the next five to cut the deficit to 9-6 with 15:15 left in the first, but the Seahawks scored the next six to up the lead to 15-6. The Eagles then scored 10 straight, and took their first lead on a pair of E.J. Willis free throws with 9:22 remaining.

The lead changed hands six times before UMW scored four straight to take a 32-28 lead with 2:44 left. A layup by Willis upped the margin to six but SMC cut the deficit to two by halftime, 36-34.

In the second half, the Eagles gradually built an eight-point lead at 62-54 with 6:38 to go, but the Seahawks cut the lead to one on a Brendan McFall layup with 2:54 left. Harvey then hit a big three pointer to return UMW's lead to four with 56 seconds left. After Devin Spencer hit a three for SMC, Braldey Riester hit a free throw with 3.1 seconds left to cap the scoring.

Mary Washington capitalized on 20 Seahawk turnovers with 15 points off those miscues, despite committing 21 turnovers themselves. Senior guard Ryan Farrar was the lone Eagle in double figures with 13 points on 4-9 three pointers, while Harvey and Willis each added nine. Freshman Sean Armstrong had seven points and tied for team honors with eight rebounds before fouling out. St. Mary's was led by Nick LaGuerre's 20 points.

The Eagles will host Salisbury University next Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in another CAC contest.
